Three Monkeys is a slight departure from Ceylan’s deeply personal and autobiographical films which were filmed with a small crew, and predominantly acted by family and friends. It also marks a new beginning of experimentation as Ceylan plays out a crime thriller plot of noir-ish conventions into his established brand of long take shots and delicate composition. In this dark and unforgiving tale, an ambitious politician flees a hit-and-run accident and pays off his chauffeur Eyüp to take the rap. The circumstances of this charade play out between Eyüp’s family and the politician as the tension between them and the guilt suffered from their actions escalate in scale. Scathing and unapologetic in its immersive depiction of class-difference, Three Monkeys is a film of great intensity that strives to encapsulate the tragic disposition of human nature. It is the first Turkish film to be shortlisted for the Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards, and Ceylan received the award for Best Director at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
This screening is on Saturday, 21 February at 4pm at the National Museum of Singapore.
