5 Things to Do in Singapore This Week: 10th August to 16th August 2020

Whether you’re an art lover or a film buff, want to have fun or feel contemplative, we have something for you this week. Explore a range of contemporary art pieces at Gajah Gallery or Siri House, or laugh till your stomach hurts with Kumar. Bring some friends together for a Bollywood movie date or a dance marathon to boogie the blues away!

Kumar’s Virtual Birthday Bash

Local comedian Kumar will be hosting a Virtual Birthday Bash on Monday, promising loads of fun and laughter. Beyond the expected humorous banter, however, Kumar is bringing a more serious note to the event, sharing stories of loved ones impacted by cancer. In partnership with the Singapore Cancer Society, he hopes to shed light on the importance of early cancer screening and detection through a show that promises to be both hilarious and moving.

Kumar’s Virtual Birthday Bash will be happening on 10 August at 9pm. RSVP and tune in here.

Explore The Secret Room

THE SECRET ROOM puts a modern twist on old-timey mystery. Multi-media artist MOJOKO takes inspiration from Film Noir and B-Movie Thrillers and creates a cross-cultural, cross-temporal mash-up of pop imagery using varying traditional mediums such as rosewood furniture, ceramics, and glass – with a modern flair. The installation will be running till the end of September.

THE SECRET ROOM is happening from now until the end of September at Siri House, Block 8D #01-02, Dempsey Road. Open Tues — Sat 11.30am — 9.30pm, Sun 11.30am — 6pm.

The Best of Bollywood With Gully Boy

One of the biggest hits of Bollywood is back to screens as part of the Asian Film Archives‘ series Releases, featuring the best of contemporary Asian cinema. Gully Boy (2019), directed by Zoya Akhtar, tells the story of a shy rapper from Mumbai’s slums battling class to chase his dreams. Head to Oldham Theatre this Saturday for a story (and a rap soundtrack) that’s raw and real.

Gully Boy will be screened on 15 August at 4pm at Oldham Theatre, 1 Canning Rise. Get your tickets here at S$10 each.

Dance The Night Away With The Stay Home Boogie

Clubs may still be closed, but that won’t stop us from dancing the night away. Groove to jams from the 80s to the 00s with NINETEEN80‘s resident DJs in Together Forever: The Stay Home Boogie. Pour yourself a tipple (or three) and dance like nobody’s watching – because they aren’t. The best part is, you won’t even have to get yourself home afterwards.

NINETEEN80‘s Together Forever: The Stay Home Boogie will be streaming here on 14 August at 11pm.

Immerse Yourself in Contemporary Art at Gajah Gallery

Unease is not a foreign feeling to us these days, and four young artists have used it as the inspiration for their works in the latest edition of Gajah Gallery’s New Now series, The New Now IV: TENSION/CREATION. Luh Gede Gita Sangita Yasa, Noreen Loh, Kass Koh, and Koh Kai Ting explore tensions and discomfort in their own experiences as emerging artists, each confronting the difficult, the uncertain, and the unspoken in their own unique way.

The New Now IV: TENSION/CREATION is happening from 14 August — 6 September 2020 at Gajah Gallery, 39 Keppel Road #03-04.
