Flor De Caña Zero Waste Month: Premium Rum Brand Introduces Environmental Responsibility Into Your Weekend Fun

Did you know that in 2021 Singapore generated a whopping 6.94 million tonnes of solid waste? Out of which 817,000 tonnes was just food waste, and only 19% of it was recycled? If your face is about the same as ours once you’ve done the math, we’ve got news for you.
After a smash hit last year, sustainably sourced premium rum Flor De Caña returns with its Zero Waste Cocktails initiative to help tackle our piling food waste issue, and to see our favourite venues adopt more meaningful and sustainable practices in their everyday. This year, the campaign aims to reduce 15 tonnes of food waste working with consumers, restaurants, and the bar community in over 30 countries internationally.
In Singapore, 13 establishments are ready to make each sip count. From 15 August to 15 September 2022, the Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade certified brand is making way for guilt-free indulgence by bridging you an array of cocktails made using sustainably produced rum and ingredients derived from repurposed food scraps or leftovers.
Each venue will receive a practical ‘sustainable bar handbook’ and sustainability masterclasses with industry experts; the Nicaraguan rum will also work alongside Danil Nevsky, Founder of Indie Bartender, to research and share the best practices from the world’s top sustainable bars to the global bar community.
Saving the earth one tipple at a time, (we’re looking at you orange peels), kickstart your sustainable drinking era with Flor De Caña Centenario 12-year old cocktails. Enjoyed for its exceptional smoothness and notes of honeyed oak woods, vanilla and toasted nuts, head to bars like Low Tide and Night Hawk, where the banana takes centre stage.
At Low Tide, sip the Manhattan-inspired Ripe and Appealing, which repurposes over-ripened bananas, and fermenting them into banana wine to replace vermouth. The nutty Total Synastry at Night Hawk is made using the entire fruit – banana syrup steeped with peels is stirred down with rum and Amontillado sherry.
For the tart and refreshing side of fruity, see Hello Cello by Nutmeg & Clove, a take on the Italian classic Sgroppino with citrus sorbet made from leftover citrus husk, and The Bar @ 15 Stamford‘s Garden of Eden. Rum meets a homemade apple pie syrup, produced using discarded cores and peels, and fresh lemon juice.
Shaking things up, Root and Grain is a nutty tipple that flash-infuses the rum with toasted grains (think farro, black sesame, and wild rice) Set of Six, while Papa Doble presents Pop Didi Pop, a perk-me-up that redistills Flor De Caña 12 years with spent coffee and cocoa nibs for a pleasantly bitter sip.
The month-long campaign will conclude with a roaring celebration at Low Tide with guest bartenders and a final sip of the conscious cocktail creations of this year. Amazing drinks and good vibes aside, attendees can also look forward to friendly bartending competitions and other activities. Remember to mark Sunday, 4 September 2022 on your calendars.
