Get Your Mojo On With Mojo Burps: Review

As you walk down the pavement of Tanjong Katong, there’s a high chance you wouldn’t notice Mojo Burps. Coffee shop by day, bar and beer garden by night, Mojo Burps eschews any hint of polished decor or a hipster environment. There is definitely a chill-out ghetto feel to this humble bar that enables it to hold it own, even in comparison to its fancier neighbours.
Once we were seated, three huge refrigerators caught our eyes. They were all filled to the brim with an extensive selection of bottled international beers that would have sufficiently served a United Nations Cabinet meeting.
Mojo Burps is the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Beer freaks who don’t have a whiff of pretentiousness on them. With beers like Chocolate Mint Stout, Banana Bread Beer and Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale, there’s no end to the amount of exotic options available! While we were bummed that their tap selection wasn’t as diverse, it was easy to imagine us wiping out the refrigerators.
After sampling various craft beers, we started to feel a little peckish. First up? Spam fries ($8.90). Burnt brown and crispy, the flavour of luncheon exploded on our tastebuds – definitely a perfect side-dish to complement a couple of cold beers. For a very reasonable price, their buffalo wings ($7.90 for 6 mid-joints) are worth a shot as well. A lot of food establishments try and fail to get the mixture of the famed chicken wings right, and we were glad that Mojo Burps did. A nice blend of sour and spicy left us wanting more.
Our mains of choice were a hearty looking Beef Burger ($13.90) and a cubed Australian Angus Steak ($19.90) – yes, we love our meats. Admittedly, the beef burger wasn’t the best we had quality-wise, but the folks at Mojo Burps do it more than well enough for the price. The patty was as juicy as it should be, and the egg, at least, added another layer of texture to the burger.
The Australian Angus Steak was sufficiently tasty to sustain our interest, but it doesn’t verge on the spectacular. We liked the novelty of buff little cubes of steak – okay so we’re kinda lazy – though it takes some away of the experience of eating a proper steak.
Overall, Mojo Burps is a great place to get your mojo on after a long day at work. If you’re expecting lavish gourmet dishes or a high-end place to hang out, the neighbourhood has a few other offerings you can consider. Wallet-friendly prices, a fantastic range of beers, and decent enough food makes this modest bar a hidden gem.
