Welcome to February’s Just Opened where we recommend you go raw! get your Caribbean vibes on, try a little Spanish/Japanese fusion, travel back in time to an old world Chinese inn and seek out a rather superb cup of coffee. Happy eating and drinking Nomads!
Glow Deli
If you’re feeling a little chunky after the excess of Christmas and then CNY, rejoice at the arrival of Glow, the latest raw food restaurant to hit town. Dispersing the myth that raw food is synonymous with incense and tie-dye, Glow is decidedly hipster and resembles a cool coffee joint which was just the intention, to entice people in the door…and then make them healthy! With a focus on artisan producers from around the world that take pride in their crafts, Glow knows the source of everything they offer and take pride in offering heat-free, sugar-free, nutritious and exceptionally healthy food. BUT, is it tasty? Feedback is yes, very much so, and that with inventive trickery and innovation, the dishes don’t taste ‘overly-organic!’. They have their own line of cold pressed juice, a deli and rather excitingly, after hours become afterglow! A cheeky cocktail bar that promises to be as healthy as possible, where fresh juices, herbs, flowers and all things healthy equal out the badness of alcohol! (well, thats what we shall be telling ourselves anyway)!

Bam! Tapas Sake Bar
Not much more than a slinky corridor off Tras Street is Bam! the latest Spanish tapas eatery to pop up and tempt you with delectable small bites, hipper than hip exposed pipe bulbs and raw concrete, plus a buzzy, casual vibe. Serving up Spanish inspired dishes with a decidedly Japanese twist may raise eyebrows but it works; new flavours and combinations are intriguing and the introduction of Sake from executive chef Pepe Moncayo seems to be a popular move. The menu is compact and well-executed with unusual sounding dishes such as Sakura Ebi Omelette With Melon And All-i-oli and Pork ear with Burrata…so perhaps not one for the unadventurous eater! But passing by last weekend, it was absolutely heaving so it’s a good job that Singapore is full of adventure-seekers!

Ke Zhan
Walking into Ke Zhan feels a bit like you’re at Universal studios, and they’ve themed a ‘ye olde world’ Chinese traditional inn….but in a good way! Far from being a criticism, we actually found it charming. Ke Zhans’ authentic props, rustic wooden furniture and faux blossom trees set the scene perfectly for the dim sum, Sze chuan, Guangdong and other Chinese ‘authentic street bites style’ menu. We love the Chinese legendary swordsman dramas playing on TV screens, just close your eyes and imagine you’ve travelled back in time to ancient China!

Assembly Coffee
More super cool coffee places? Yes please! Joining Hatched in that odd little pocket flanked by the Botanic Gardens and garden centres is Assembly Coffee, a Third Wave Coffee Movement cafe that has a simple, small menu including the likes of all-day breakfast, eggs, sandwiches and so on, although apparently the Salted Caramel waffles are tremendous. But the real focus is on the coffee sourced from local roasters Liberty and Geisha and served by the hugely knowledgeable barristers who make a mean cup of java. It’s a small homely little place so not one to venture out to with a big group but for a leisurely intimate brekkie, and a excellent cup of joe, definitely worth checking out.

Seasalt Caribbean Deli @ PasarBella
After the arrival of Lime House, it seems that the appetite for the flavours of the Caribbean has been awakened, and so we were excited to hear about this place that recently opened up in PasarBella. Even more so because our source told us that on the day that she went, the Grandmama of Seasalt Caribbean Deli was at the stall, handing out smiles with the flavoursome offerings…and this makes us deliriously happy! Offering dishes that are prepared with the flavours well loved by the people of the Caribbean islands and South America, you can expect plantain, yaroa and superbly spiced meats, plus they have a range of unusual ‘tropical’ cakes such as Honey and Pineapple Breakfast Cake…yum,y!
