Unless you are new to vegetarian food, New Green Pasture Café needs no introduction. It is well-known amongst vegetarians and carnivores alike, for its creative take on local and Asian-inspired cuisine. The organic café is located in Fortune Centre, a vegetarian foodie’s heaven and at first glance, it seems rather unassuming – a standard eatery in a mall full of healthy vegetarian delights.
You might not even get to it if you didn’t know it was there, being the only eatery on the 4th floor of this food mall, and you may get side-tracked by the heaps of healthy cafes offering their wholesome fare.
But it is surely well worth the hike to the top floor to experience some down-to-earth good food that Mother Nature intended, in a warm and cosy ambience. The owner, Sophia Teh used to be a fashion designer which is obvious from the way she dresses (she was wearing trendy striped pants and a beret at lunch time!). Her calling came when friends kept telling her how delicious and healthy her food was, and she decided to open an organic café.
This place definitely stands out from the crowd. Its menu is eclectic ranging from Seaweed Rolls (sushi rolls packed with carrots, beetroot and lettuce drizzled with a light, zesty sauce – $6.50), Salad Taupok (dried tofu pockets stuffed with lots of veggies – $7)…
to Korean Bi-Bim-Bap (classic Korean dish served in a sizzling bowl with lots of ingredients such as pumpkin, tofu, mock fish and seaweed, $9.50)…
and includes several raw food dishes. Sophia designs the menu herself and was into raw food long before it became all the craze! She is very well-versed on the health benefits of key ingredients and would be more than happy to share her knowledge with you. All their food is organic and they have a small section selling organic food products.
A must try is their Charcoal Noodle Salad ($9), it’s beautiful and colourful with different layers of contrasting flavours. First you have the slightly burnt taste of charcoal, followed by sweetness and tartness from the plum sauce, complimented by creamy mayonnaise and ripe chunks of pomelo, and the final taste to hit your palate is the earthiness brought by shredded seaweed. A true masterpiece indeed; not only does it taste amazing, it makes you feels like you have de-toxed from inside out!
