Having visited nearly 100 cities in 45 countries, the annual World Press Photo exhibition will arrive at its final destination, Singapore. From 8 to 30 March, 154 stunning photos by the world’s top 54 photographers will be on show in the iconic setting of Raffles Hotel. Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) Lawrence Wong will open the exhibition on 7th March.
The award-winning photos form an eyewitness record of global events from the previous year, giving the viewer a chance to revisit some of the most significant moments of 2012, such as the Syrian conflict and the London Olympic Games. From a total of 103,481 images submitted to the 56th contest by 5,666 photographers, these photos were judged to be the best across nine categories. Of these entries 23 photographers were from Singapore.
‘When I look at the results I see stellar examples of first-rate photojournalism that are powerful, that are lasting, and that will reach all those who contemplate them,’ comments Santiago Lyon, Chair of the 2013 jury.
During the fifty-six years the annual contest has been held, the exhibition visited Singapore just twice, in 2002 and 2006. Thanks to several sponsors and partners, this emotive showcase will be brought to Singapore for the third time. The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.
Often described as the ‘Oscars’ of journalism, World Press Photo is one of the most prestigious annual contests to which thousands of press and documentary photographers submit their images. It is one of the initiatives of the World Press Photo Foundation which is committed to supporting and advancing high standards in photojournalism and documentary photography worldwide; and to generate wide public interest in appreciation for the work of photographers and for the free exchange of information.
World Press Photo Contest
Founded in 1955, the annual contest is organised by World Press Photo Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit organisation based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In fifty-seven years World Press Photo has become the leading international contest in photojournalism. Every year the entries are judged by an independent, international jury of nineteen members. All the prize-winning photographs are assembled into one collection that travels the globe. The award-winning images are published in a yearbook in six languages and distributed worldwide. In more than half a century World Press Photo has amassed a rich archive comprising some 10,000 images. Activities include the annual photojournalism and multimedia contests and global exhibition tours.
