PUBLISHED August 13th, 2017 06:00 am | UPDATED May 14th, 2018 12:27 pm
This week may just be the best ever for concerts in Singapore yet, as Lido, Cigarettes After Sex – amongst many other incredible international performers – will be landing on our shores for their respective gigs. As if that wasn’t enough, Beerfest Asia will also be returning, so we definitely have a jam-packed week to look forward to.
Pusakal: From the Streets of Philippines
Meaning ‘stray cat’ in Tagalog, Pusakal seeks to translate the nomadic spirit of the street cat – a creature that teeters on the brink of wilderness and domestication – into its survey of contemporary art in the Philippines. Colourful, kitschy, and almost gauche, the multitudinous paintings and prints on display instantly invite visitors to wonder if they could ever be taken from the spirited streets of Philippines, and transplanted into the sterile, white cubes of your standard, institutionalised museum space. More importantly, this showcase of works by over 20 Filipino artists seeks to ultimately celebrate the vibrancy of the country’s diverse and burgeoning art scene today.
Pusakal: From the Streets of Philippines will be happening from 30 July to 26 August 2017, Mon – Fri: 11am – 7pm, Sat: 2pm – 7pm, at Kult Gallery, 11 Upper Wilkie Rd. Blk C2-5 Emily Hill, Singapore 228120. For more information, check out their event page here.

Secret Sounds Asia Presents Cigarettes After Sex
Plunge yourself into the vivid nocturnal dreamscapes of ambient pop music, and let its lush and tender melodies seduce you for the evening, as Cigarettes After Sex play their very first concert in Singapore. Fronted by Greg Gonzalez, the American band has been lauded for their stunning poetic romanticism and elemental vibes since the release of their first EP, “I.”, in 2012. Their latest self-titled release strays no further from what they are best known for, with Gonzalez’s cooing vocals, and the band’s dreamlike synths and downtempo guitars permeating through the album. It is tantalizingly soft and beautiful – and most certainly something that you should look forward to hearing in person, at a live gig.
Secret Sounds Asia Presents Cigarettes After Sex will be happening on 17 August 2017, 7pm, at Capitol Theatre, 11 Stamford Road, Capitol Piazza, Singapore, 178884. For tickets and more information, check out their event page here.
National Geographic: Celebrating the End of Food Waste with Tristram Stuart
Despite the world already producing enough food to conceivably sustain its entire population, why are almost a billion people still going to sleep hungry every night? This is only one of the many pressing questions that leading author, environmentalist, and speaker, Tristram Stuart will address in his talk, organised in collaboration with National Geographic, NTU Singapore, and National Environment Agency. Having risen to prominence with his book, Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal, and later his TED Talk, which has been streamed over 150,000 times, the British activist will now share with local audiences his insights into the global food crisis, in hopes of bettering the situation. For food aficionados and tree huggers alike, this event is most pertinent!
National Geographic: Celebrating the End of Food Waste with Tristram Stuart will be happening on 20 August 2017, 3.30pm, at Grand Theatre, MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands, 4 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018973. For tickets and more information, check out their event page here.
