This May, the LASALLE performing arts faculty will be presenting the Pajama Game – one of the classic musicals of the American Broadway theatre. Based on the book 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell, The Pajama Game was first produced in 1954, followed by the film version in 1957 with Doris Day and most of the original Broadway cast.
The plot involves a strike by workers in a pajama factory who are demanding a seven-and-a-half cent raise. Against this background, there are the parallel love stories between Babe, the grievance committee head, and Sid, the new factory supervisor, and between Hines, the jealous factory time-keeper and his irrepressible girlfriend, the flirtatious Gladys Hotchkiss.
Full of vibrant characters and funny situations it is easy to see why this musical comedy has proved to be so popular with audiences around the world – especially considering the score, one of the very best of the musical theatre, that includes such classics as ‘Hey There’, ‘I’ll Never Be Jealous Again’, ‘Steam Heat’ and ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’. Following the success of last year’s Graduation Musical, The Wedding Singer, Nikki Snelson returns as visiting artist to choreograph and co-direct The Pajama Game. Featuring all three levels of Musical Theatre this is a show for all the family to come and enjoy.
The Pajama Game will run from Wed 6 May – Sat 9 May, at 8pm at The Singapore Airlines Theatre, Basement 1, LASALLE College of the Arts.
Tickets are priced $15 (Standard) / $10 (Student), and can be purchased here.
