Mark Thia: Night Throwing

Night Throwing is a new series of photographs by Singaporean artist Mark Thia. The photographs are ‘performative self-portraits’ in which object, language and the figure collide.

The title Night Throwing itself gives us a hint of the artist’s process. His photographs are a projection of his thoughts and a means for him to project—to ‘throw’—his thoughts and memories. The objects in the photographs are surrogates for an image of the artist. The night is the most productive time for Thia, and all the photographs in this exhibition are set, staged and shot at night. The title too exemplifies Thia’s balancing act between concealing and revealing.
