A.K.A Wayward- Singapore at its fashion best!

There’s nothing we love more here at City Nomads, than embracing and shouting about local talent, which is why I felt it was about time to put the spotlight on homegrown fashion label, A.K.A Wayward.

With a dash of humour, a healthy amount of irreverence and a lot of talent, A.K.A Wayward create collections for stylish folks who are quirky, fun and open to a little silliness! Something of a breath of fresh air in Singapore’s fashion scene, their motto is ‘We don’t take ourselves too seriously but we make things seriously…’ In the world of fashion where ALOT of people take themselves very seriously indeed, isn’t it nice to know that the designer wants you to have a little fun?

Initially dedicated to menswear, A.K.A Wayward recently turned their hand to dressing the ladies of Singapore, and just as the menswear collections have cheeky detailing and individual tweaks, the womenswear collection is as inspired “we feel that clothes don’t necessarily have to be complicated to be interesting, but they really do need to have character.”

The new Pre-Fall collection entitled Monday Mornings is about letting things have their way, for them to simply be.” Inspired by the story behind a couple, the imagery presented is a little insight of how they spend their Monday mornings together and how their wardrobes offer a perfect kind of fashion symmetry.

“This collection follows the adventures of Wayward’s colourful pair, from just another day to the plain mad – off-kilter ones.We went a little deeper and looked into their lives to discover a story behind them; a dollop of humour, a dash of character, a smidgen of magic perhaps.”

The Menswear collection has a relaxed attitude which picks up perfectly on the slouchy loose looks currently big on international catwalks. Fabric is light, cuts are a little wider and the look is easy and breezy, perfect for the intense humidity of Singapore. It’s relaxed, but not sloppy thanks to genius detailing that ensures that dressed down looks simple, effortless but still chic.

Womenswear is a little more structured, and more about the juxtaposition of fabrics, patterns and shapes creating modern wearability with an unique image. I am fully loving this dress which carries the sheer lace through to a back panel, but is kept fresh and different through the use of a bold gingham, because lace and sheer can sometimes look, y’know, a bit, lace and sheer!

The latest addition to the A.K.A Wayward fashion empire is STACK-  a line of handcrafted accessories constructed from leather, waxed and nylon multi-plait cords, metal charms and hardware.

Initially 100 limited edition pieces of uniquely handcrafted bracelets, every piece is one of a kind packaged in a Karter Scientific® round bottomed test tube, stamped with its own ID number on a porcelain seal.

A.K.A Wayward are fresh and different and not only one to watch, but one to be proud of. Here in Singapore we often look outwards to international designers and fresh overseas talent, but right here we have bold, inventive fashion making waves and that is something to shout about.
