Do You Believe in Angels

Curated by Tony Godfrey

Angels often used to appear in art but are rarely seen there today, even though recent surveys more than fifty per cent of people believe angels are with us still and active in this world. Why is this so? Do you believe in angels? Please come and let us know: there will be ballot boxes for you to cast your opinion.

This exhibition includes work by artists from the UK, Portugal, USA, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. The curator, Tony Godfrey, asked one hundred artists whom he had worked with ‘to make a reply on a piece of paper (or similar material) no bigger than A3 to the question “Do you believe in angels?” This may be a statement, a photograph, drawing, watercolour or painting, It may be written, drawn or printed) or it can be an object made from the sheet of paper. If I or someone else cannot pick it up it can be sent to me by post or fax or email. (This may of course raise other questions: “What would an angel look like and do?” or ‘How can you possibly represent something like this?’). Over fifty artists responded to this theme, reflecting diverse range of mediums from printmaking, collage, photography, works on paper, painting, cut-outs to mixed media.
