Editor’s pick: Top 5 things to do in Singapore this week

Welcome to our new series… where we pick out five great things to do in Singapore every week. In this edition, the very first of 2014, we break the new year myth that there’s nothing to do in January because that couldn’t be further from the truth! This week is all about soaking up local talent proving that Singapore is awash with it – contrary to what all those skeptics say – with live music, theatre, dance plus a very cool creative market and art exhibition. If your New Year’s resolution was to get off your butt and get out and about more, then give one of these a try:

1. Get your creative dose at MAAD Market of Artists and Designers

Our favourite monthly market is back! With the usual happy mix of great live music, talented artistry, design and creativity and late night shopping. Look out for creative works ranging from mini artisanal postcards, bookbinding works, fashion, plush toys, art, illustrations, craft & accessories, literature, photography, industrial design, creative services, gifts, furniture, artisanal works plus much more. For more information on this month’s event see the MAAD Facebook page here.

MAAD Market of Artists and Designers takes place on Friday 10th January from 5pm at red dot design museum, 28 Maxwell Road Singapore 069120.

2. Be blown away by fresh talent at Sprouts 5th Edition

No we’re not talking about those round green veggies, but the annual showcase of Singapore’s up and coming choreographers! Last year we were blown away by the ingenuity and creativity of the fresh choreographic concepts masterminded by budding new talents so we can’t wait for the showcase of this year’s best.

Sprouts 5th Edition takes place on Saturday 11th January at Drama Theatre, SOTA (School of the Arts), 1 Zubir Said Drive, Singapore 227968. For more information and to book tickets see here.

3. Take a trip down memory lane at WINDOWSHOP: A Modern Day Cabinet of Curiosities

There’s nothing we love more than a bit of vintage, a love that we have in common with one of our favourite local artists Dawn Ng. Head down to her forthcoming exhibition, WINDOWSHOP: A Modern Day Cabinet of Curiosities and marvel at thousands of objects hand-picked from local junk stores, homes, and shops from a peculiar collection of tailor-made and titled keepsakes. Get ready to get nostalgic as WINDOWSHOP brings to you a personal memory theatre of Singapore’s own Golden Age.

WINDOWSHOP: A Modern Day Cabinet of Curiosities is exhibiting  from Saturday, 11th January to Sunday, 09th February at Chan Hampe Gallery, Raffles Hotel Arcade, Unit #01-20/21, 328 North Bridge Road, Singapore 188719. For more information see here.

4. Get cultured at M1 Singapore Fringe Festival

Back once again this year and celebrating their 10th birthday is this annual festival of theatre, dance, music, visual arts and mixed media created and presented by Singaporeans and international artists. Curated by The Necessary Stage, the Festival promises to bring the best of contemporary, cutting-edge and socially engaged works to you, the people, in a thought-provoking line up.

M1 Fringe Festival takes place from Wednesday 8th January to Sunday 19th January for more information on the programme and timings please see here.

5. Shake your money maker at Funk Soul Brother

Lose yourself in music by some of Singapore’s best funk and soul acts performing alongside guest vocalists and horn players. If you’ve got the January blues, then an uplifting weekend of funk and soul is probably just what you need to shake it off!  With nine-piece band Fungkimunkees who’ll be playing some of the funkiest and grooviest music in Singapore; What Is Hip?, an 11-piece tribute band busting out funky classics from the likes of Earth,Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Incognito; and finally The Mighty Mighty, Singapore’s toughest funk band who’ll be dishing out their trademark blistering funk and sweet music.

Funk Soul Brother takes place on Friday 10th – Sunday 12th January at Esplanade. For more information on line up and timings see here.
