King Rama IX Park

Built in 1987 to celebrate King Bhumibol’s 60th birthday, King Rama IX Park or Suan Luang Rama 9 Park is Bangkok’s largest park. Less touristy than other parks like Lumpini Park, this 200-acre green space is a lovely place to sit back and relax in a verdant envrionment, or to simply catch a glimpse of how locals unwind on their off-days. There is also a gallery with photos, paintings and information celebrating the life of the King, although much of it isn’t in English.

Getting there: Drive to Srinakarin road and turn left to Chalermprakiet Rama 9 or take bus No. 511 and 206

When Joel’s not partaking in one of his shameless eating sessions, he likes to think of himself as a sponge – absorbing the mysteries and beauty of our world – be it through a good book or a wacky jaunt in a foreign country.
