Lunch for $8.80? It can only be Eight Cafe Bar….

There’s something about Eight Cafe which keeps me coming back. Sure it might be something to do with the fact that you can eat there for $8.80, but not only that – you get homely food, in a relaxed environment with a pretty groovy retro-inspired interior all served up in a shophouse. A no brainer? Yes, it sure is.
This is not a place for fancy fare – but more like food that could have been cooked by my mamma. And there’s nothing like the comforting feeling you get when eating mamma’s home-cooked food.
The daily lunch menu includes dishes like Singapore Laksa and Smoked Ducked Skewer Rice (all for $8.80) and there’s also a choice of two daily special lunch sets which come with a soft drink or green tea thrown in – also for $8.80.
On one visit there my lunch partner and I tucked into the Smoked Ducked Skewer Rice which was pretty tasty, a little bit chewy and nicely satisfying…
and one of the specials for that day, the Beef Stew with Fried Onions (guess what, it was $8.80)….seriously I could have sworn my mum cooked this. Simple, tasty, comfort food.
On my return visit with The City Nomad we both munched onto the specials for the day. Myself, a Panfried Fillet of Dory (holy moly $8.80 again!) which I think is my favourite I’ve had so far. A little sweet and spicey and a nice, light, lunch time fix for a piggy Ms Demeanour who had been eating way too much of late.
The Chicken Curry (hey do I need to tell you the price….$8.80!) was a simple, comforting, home-style dish, served on the bone which we rather quite loved.
Seeing as the desserts are also all $8.80 each, we thought we’d just keep eating on each occasion. While not mind blowing, the desserts are perfect for satisfying that post-lunch sweet fix.
On the first occasion, with the Berry Cheesecake… and on the next, with the Molten Chocolate Pudding which although looked like it had trouble standing up again was pretty good for $8.80….
Two people, two home-style mains, drinks and a dessert to share on each visit for under $30 is not to be sniffed at. A good little spot for a cheap eat with decent fair in a quaint place with a chilled vibe. It’s no wonder these guys are so busy whenever I’ve had lunch there… so make sure you get there early to bag a table !
