Sharmaine’s Pick: Good Bye Lenin

Genre: Drama, Peculiar Comedy, Romance

In Good Bye Lenin, catch a glimpse of Germany’s capital, before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the journey of the Kerner family. Shocked from seeing her son participating in an anti-communist rally, Christiane falls into a coma and misses the revolution. When she wakes, doctors warn the family that any jarring news could result in a fatal heart attack, forcing the family to go to great lengths to pretend communism still reigns in Berlin. According to Sharmaine, “I don’t think it’s a film where you fall in love with the characters. It’s one that showcases different views of the historical event and gives perspective of that period of time, and how Berlin came to be what it is today.”

Good Bye Lenin is available for streaming online. Pro-tip: You can use VPN to link to Germany network and Netflix account to view the movie.

Kim’s Pick: Q-Force

Genre: Adult Animated Comedy

Banished for his sexual orientation, outstanding Agent Steve “Mary” Maryweather decides to find his own spy mission and lead his team (of bi trans and lesbians) to prove their worth. “I binged the whole series in one sitting and enjoyed every moment of the show. The series is filled with puns, sarcasms and saucy humour every step of the way. I love how it lays the bare emotions and problems each character faces as queers, and that they are different but also just the same as any straight person.”, says Kim. Drag queen by day, master of disguise by night, Twink is Kim’s favourite character, packing the show with surprises, energy, and positivity.

Q-Force is available for streaming on Netflix.

Wen Jing’s Pick: Together Together

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Their perceptions of connection, boundaries and love are quickly challenged as a young loner becomes a gestational surrogate for a single man in his 40s. Anna (the surrogate), peaks Wen Jing’s interest, with her smartness, sardonic comments and fierce independent ability which never closes off her ability to show her vulnerable side. Wen Jing’s favourite scene so far is when the two protagonists pick the colour of the nursery’s wall. “Although seemingly mundane, this was an important point where they become closer and leads them to question the boundaries of their relationship” Wen Jing points out.

Together Together is available for streaming on Netflix.

Deepika’s Pick: Stranger Things

 Genre: Fantasy, Horror

The Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, Stranger Things is back with its final season! This season we see the storyline trails between the past and the present, to create an understanding of why things are getting worse in Hawkins again. In part one, you’ll find that there is much less focus on the characters, instead the attention-to-horror has been amped up. This way of story-telling keeps the audience guessing and on the edge of the seat till the very end. Deepika finds that the scary scenes tend to orientate toward psychological horror in a way that is refreshing and new. “This type of horror is not commonly found in fictional tales, so bringing together supernatural theme and psychological horror is quite ingenious”.

Stranger Things is available for streaming on Netflix. The second part of Season 4 is set to be released on July 1, 2022.

Tanisha’s Pick: Only Murders in the Building

Genre: Comedy, Mystery

A fated elevator ride brings together three true-crime lovers who live in the infamous Arconia Building. After an alarm sets off in the building, a grisly death is revealed which the police believes to be a suicide. Convinced it was a murder instead, Charles, Oliver and Mabel set out on an adventure to find the truth. So far, Tanisha loves that as the story is told with what seems like never-ending twists and turns, the friendship between the trio deepens as more aspects of the story comes to light. Her favourite character is easily Oliver, a funky guy in his mid-60s with burst of energy, new ideas and witty one-liners.

Only Murders in the Building is available for streaming on Disney+. Season 2 is set to be released on June 28, 2022.

Emily’s Pick: Our Father

Genre: True Crime, Social Documentary

During the late 1970s Indianapolis fertility specialist Dr. Donald Cline inseminated female patients with his own sperm – without their knowledge or consent in the sinister scheme. Through a series of interviews, Our Father tells the stories of some of these women and the (at least) 94 children that Cline fathered, in a bid to uncover the truth. A key moment in the story was when Detective Sergeant Carmen Walker took Cline’s DNA sample when the warrant was served. Emily believes “at a time where women’s rights, especially the right to safe and informed reproductive care is under threat in the United States, Our Father resonates. The identity crises, health issues, and (spoiler alert) lack of justice or restitution are heartbreaking”.

Our Father is available for streaming on Netflix.

Tanisha is a firm believer that the best things in life come in small packages. When not writing or travelling, she can be found watching old Disney movies, listening to early 2000s songs or stepping out for spontaneous outings and shopping sprees.
