Revolution Coffee – a land of happy faces and full stomachs

Revolution Coffee

Since its recent opening, Revolution Coffee has been beavering away to bring its customers better coffee, great food, and a winning atmosphere. We hopped on over the other day to sample their new brunch menu and see what all the fuss was about, and we can safely say that, while it’s a bit out of the way, this charming new addition to Singapore’s café scene is worth the trek.

Of course the first question to ask about any café is: how’s the brew? We say: yummy! Owner Ajie Permana is a self-confessed caffeine nut, and spent time in Australia researching the coffee culture in order to seek out his favourite flavours. Luckily for us, he struck gold with one of two bean options on offer at Revolution Coffee – the house blend is ‘Reservoir Road’ from Sydney-based Single Origin Roasters, with Ajie proudly the first to bring their beans back to our little red dot. This blend goes particularly well with milkier coffee, so order yourself a latte or a cappuccino and sit back to savour the mellow caramel flavour.

If you’re lucky, you might also get a chance to sample a second blend, which will pop up on rotation every time Ajie gets the chance to source some new and interesting beans either locally or overseas. Either way, you’re in for a mean cuppa joe.

To compliment your tasty beverages is a new menu designed by Shen Tan, the owner-chef behind Duxton’s Wok and Barrel – this is some serious breakfast food that packs an epic punch. With the café now open on weekends, you really need to get down there and sample some of their goods – we say start with the banana bread, as it tends to run out quickly (always a good sign!), before moving on to some flavour-packed scrambled eggs with home-made tomato confit, or one of their obscenely large slabs of a sandwich, all made fresh in house every day from scratch.

If you’re in the mood for something a little sweeter however, you’d do well to attack a serving of their gula melaka butterscotch pancakes with fresh bananas, or one of their melt-in-the-mouth warm gooey scones. Then you can round it off with a gorgeous afoggato, in case you haven’t had quite enough coffee…

We also like the relaxed setting at Revolution Coffee – while the space is a little on the small side, the walls are floor-to-ceiling glass, which gives it a great open and airy vibe. Plus, depending on how social you feel, you can take a seat at a big round table in the centre of the café, strike up a conversation with your fellow caffeine addicts and have a spin of the giant lazy susan in the middle. Fun fact for you to impress your new table mates – this giant communal table was made from wood previously used as benches in the now-demolished Yishun, Tampines and National stadiums. Nifty!

Last but not least, the far wall sports a funky collage, especially commissioned for the café and created by none other than the now infamous ‘sticker lady’ Samantha Lo, or should we say SKL0. A compliment to the cool, laid-back style that Revolution Coffee emits in spades, we really enjoyed our downtime here and found it particularly difficult to drag ourselves away after chatting with the delightful staff and being fed to the point of bursting. While the One-North area is still a little tricky to access, get your Nomadic selves down here for an afternoon and give yourselves a well-deserved break. We’ll see you at the communal table (with scone crumbs all over our happy faces)…
