Sweet sounds in the Hood (Bar and Cafe)

If you love live music and you haven’t heard of Hood Bar and Cafe, then it’s probably somewhere you should be checking out. The reason why we decided to highlight Hood Bar and Cafe over here on City Nomads, is because these guys are passionate about discovering and showcasing local talent…and well, we have to say we feel the same!

You’ll find a complete mix of sounds over at Hood, thanks to the fact that each act is picked for their unique sound and quality. And while they not might not all be to your taste (depending on exactly what your taste is), there are bound to be some which make your ears prick up.

For us, what it’s all about, is their Saturday Original Session, which sees local talents shun covers for original tunes and compositions. Hood “believes the journey for the unearthing of Singapore has just begun”. And we agree with them!

We got hold of the schedule for September and had a good old musical forage around to see which acts did exactly just that. And here’s our favourite three….

D’in Cheung – 15th September

For those who like their melodies in Mandarin, full of guitar, a little bit sentimental, and served up with a good dose of sincerity, then try the soothing, acoustic sounds of D’in.  Born in Singapore, but having since had a rather Nomadic existence (much like us), you can catch D’in as he prepares for the launch of his second album, which his growing following in Hong Kong is bound to be excited about. To find out more and listen to some of D’in’s songs, see here.

I Hate This Place – 22nd September

If something with a more electro feel is what you’re after, then check these guys out. I Hate This Place is a celebration of everything that puts us off-kilter…and everything that brings us back again. So I guess their inspiration is endless then! Taking their cue from 80’s synthpop groups, while their music might sound happy and care-free listen harder and you’ll find some sensitive and thoughtful messaging in there. Having released their latest album, Shiny One, a year ago, these guys are currently making waves in Japan – and we know those guys are the overall tastemakers in Asia so they must be on to a good thing! Find out more and listen to some tracks here.

Shimona Kee – 29th September

If life has been a bit tough and you need some balm for the soul, Shimona’s mesmerizing voice woven in with sounds of guitar, ukulele and piano is probably just what you need. An acoustic journey of simple melodies, strong tunes, and lyrics about the ups and downs of life – and even social media – will fill you with warmth as they gently coerce you into forgetting your troubles for a while. She’s been popping up all over Singapore this year since her album launch and we’re sure you’ll be seeing more of her! Find out more and listen to some tracks here.
