Theatre Productions and Concerts to Catch in the Second Half of 2022 in Singapore

Like a breath of fresh air, theatre shows and groovy concerts are making their way back to our grounds. With international headliners, local artists and production houses putting up a heart-pumping show, and emotional heart-to-heart conversations on stage, it’s about time we return to Singapore’s lively entertainment scene that we all know and love! Here’s the lowdown on what to catch in the second half of 2022.

The Sound of Music

22 November – 9 December 2022 | BASE Entertainment Asia

Who doesn’t know The Sound of Music? Nearly six decades since the film was released, BASE Entertainment Asia is bringing the live musical to Singapore this year end. With a new international cast and crew, and our own tiny locals in roles of the von Trapp children, the highly acclaimed production retells the true story of Maria, an aspiring nun who’s sent to be the governess of the seven children of one widowed Captain von Trapp. Besides re-introducing the children to music, Maria’s story also sheds a light onto the family’s flight across the Austrian mountains, prior to the outbreak of World War II.

Recalling Mother

Written and performed by Claire Wong and Noorlinah Mohamed, Recalling Mother explores our often strong but complicated relationships with our mothers. Wong and Mohamed share the stories of their mothers in this funny and moving piece. First produced and shown in an intimate setting of a fine art gallery in 2009, the unique and nuanced theatrical experience presented by Checkpoint Theatre celebrated the joys and challenges of both motherhood and daughterhood.

Billie Eilish: Happier Than Ever World Tour

Seven-time Grammy Award winner and musical sensation Billie Eilish needs no introduction. The stage of National Stadium is springing back to action as the American pop sensation makes her way to our tiny island for the first time ever. During her stop here for her Happier Than Ever World Tour, catch highly anticipated songs like Getting Older, Lost Cause, Bad Guy and Therefore I Am, along with her singer-songwriter and record producing brother FINNEAS. The show comes even more alive with incredible lighting and background graphics.

The Fourth Trimester

4 – 14 August 2022 | Drama Centre Theatre

Playwright Faith Ng and director Claire Wong return with The Fourth Trimester, after sold-out runs of critically acclaimed plays in 2015 and 2017. In their new masterpiece, the pair questions what it means to be happy in contemporary Singapore, and share the story of overwhelmed first-time parents Samantha and Aaron. As their close friends gather around for support, we catch bear witness to the hurdles caused by adulting, parenthood and self-identity. The couple finds foils in picture-perfect couple Lisa and Daniel, who are feeling the strain of family life on their relationship and Ann, who yearns for a space of her own.

Transverse Orientation

26 – 27 August 2022 | Esplanade Theatre

After touring more than twenty cities in Europe and America, Greek director and visual artist Dimitris Papaioannou finally brings his latest creation, Transverse Orientation to Asia. Taking inspiration from the natural behaviour of moths to seek light, he takes to theatre, choreography and live performance to explore existential themes, mining mythology and art history. With the help of evocative and humorous imagery and projection, the art-piece kills multiple birds with one stone: challenging and enrapturing the audience with displays of chaos and reconstruction, and the human compulsion to find meaning in life.

LANY

LANY is hitting the road with “a november to remember” theme. The American pop rock band from Los Angeles is coming back to Singapore for a night of sick beats and dreamy pop with a hint of R&B spirit. In addition to their top hits from albums LANY and Malibu Nights, hear the latest Mama’s Boy covering hits like the ILYSB, good guys, Super Far and the latest releases like ex i never had. With over 40 of their songs already in our playlists, this is one concert to catch for us.

The LKY Musical 

From 7 Sept 2022 | Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands

The man who made our tiny island what it is today, Mr Lee Kwan Yew is easily the most important part of Singapore’s rich history. This September, Aiwei and Singapore Repertory Theatre tell the story of this icon, with Adrian Pang as the titular strongman and Kit Chan as his wife, Kwa Geok Choo. With music by Dick Lee, The LKY Musical chronicles the young student days of our first prime minister in 1941 up till Singapore’s achievement of independence in 1965. In this tale of idealism, war, betrayal, loyalty, determination, and love, reminisce our days of hardships, conquering insurmountable challenges and rising from the ashes.

Dancing Queen: A Tribute to ABBA

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life! Summer just got a little bit more exciting as we travel back to 1970s and relive the era of Swedish pop music group, ABBA. In Dancing Queen: A Tribute To ABBA, you’ll be charmed with a live band, flashing costumes, theatrical lighting and effects giving way to a fun, and energetic concert. Featuring all the golden hits like Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes All, and Waterloo, you’re in for a groovy party night that’ll have you up from your seats and dancing the night away.

Acting Mad

25 – 28 August 2022 | Esplanade Theatre Studio

Just as necessary as in 2019, mental health remains a topic that needs to be addressed. A play by The Orange Production, Acting Mad debuted in 2019, based on interviews with 20 actors who had experienced or were going through mental health issues.Although information is more accessible now, many still suffer silently or face stigma when they come out with their illness. So – how is affecting actors in Singapore who are seen through a lens of ‘tortured artists’ and ‘so full of drama’? In this new iteration commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay for The Studios 2022, the revised play incorporates new interview texts and testimonies, as well actors’ responses to the pandemic and its impact on them.

Maroon 5: One Last Stop

Adding a few more stops in their on-going world tour, Maroon 5 is hopping over to Asia to bring some Sugar that their fans are missing. The band has been seen performing nostalgic songs including Moves Like Jagger, Animals, Memories and more at other stops on tour. This outing will also see tracks from the band’s most recent studio album, Jordi, which as released June 2021. Whilst we wait for more details, we can already feel the power-packed concert brewing!
