Thousand Pieces of White

In the lead up to the opening of NO COUNTRY at the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Chan Hampe Galleries will display works by Myanmar-based artist duo Tun Win Aung and Wah Nu from 23 April to 11 May 2014. The artist couple were also included in the Southeast Asia Platform at Artstage Singapore earlier this year.

Wah Nu and Tun Win Aung’s expansive multi-component work Thousand Pieces of White (2009– ) reflects on 30 years of personal experience; the collaborating artists have established an archive of objects, images, printed matter, and film footage, all on the subject of memory, with each artifact displayed partially concealed beneath a layer of white. Underscoring the way in which memory’s ephemerality works, paradoxically, to enhance its significance, this equalizing veneer also conveys the gradual decay and erasure of links to the past. The fragments that remain visible offer glimpses of public and personal histories, revealing elements of Myanmar’s social, political, and cultural narrative.
