The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Singapore after a ten year absence since performing at the Esplanade to much acclaim in 2003.
The Orchestra returns in March under the baton of Maestro Eiji Oue, a former apprentice of Leonard Bernstein and the first Asian conductor to appear at the Beyreuth Festival, to perform a programme that showcases Japan’s oldest and one of its most respected orchestras.
They will be performing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, the work that opened the door to 20th century classical music, and Bugaku by the distinguished Japanese composer, Toshiro Mayuzumi, whose premiere of this ballet in New York in 1963 received much international recognition.
The Orchestra will also perform the universally loved Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto and will feature one of Japan’s top international virtuosos Kyoko Takezawa.

Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra
The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2011 as Japan’s first symphony orchestra.
With nearly 140 full time musicians, the TPO regularly performs both symphonies and operas and fulfils a demanding touring schedule both within Japan and overseas.
The TPO has established its world-class reputation through its subscription concert series and regular opera and ballet assignments at the New National Theatre. The orchestra has a busy schedule across Japan and around the world which includes broadcasting with NHK Broadcasting Corporation, various educational programs, and overseas tours such as the “Friendship Tour for the Future” in Korea and China with Maestro Chung in 2005.
The TPO is proud to have Dan Ettinger as the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor and Myung-Whun Chung as Honorary Conductor Laureate.
