Top 5 Things to Do This Week: 13 to 19 October 2014

It’s the start of the new week, and if you’re having a bad case of Monday blues, there’s no better way to shake them off than plan fun activities for the next 6 days. This weeks, expect thought provoking theatre and films, music, as well as loads of wine and ham.

For the thespians – Jerusalem

After a successful 2014 theatre season so far with Stones in His Pocket and What The Butler Saw this year, the folks at The Stage Club are putting up Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem, which was nominated for ‘Best Play’ at the Tony Awards. Set in Pewsey, Wiltshire, in Southwest England, Jerusalem is a thought provoking, comical and often raucous contemporary vision of life in England. With theatre veteran Nick Cheadle starring as protagonist Johnny Byron and Nick Kenny directing, it’s going to be one helluva ride.

Jerusalem is running 15-18 October 2014, 7.30pm, at DBS Arts Centre, 20 Merbau Road, Singapore 239035. See our feature here for more information and SISTIC for tickets.

For the sociologist – Perspectives Film Festival

One of our favourite film festivals is back with seven films and three workshops. This year, the excellently curated lineup – featuring the likes of Salaam Bombay! and Hedwig and the Angry Inch – explores the theme of displacement. How do people deal with estrangement, contempt and exile? Resist, conform and adapt, or try to strike a balance, these thought-provoking works will have you confronting humanity’s uncomfortable realities. See here for our top picks of the festival.

Perspectives Film Festival is happening 16-19 October 2014, at Golden Village Vivocity and National Museum of Singapore. For more information and tickets, see website.

For jamon fans – Jamon Carving at My Little Tapas Bar with 10Vetas

If you’re a fan of jamon, this is a must-go. For $99++, not only do you get to relish and a jamon-inspired tapas menu (we particularly enjoyed the tender Braised Iberico Pork Jowl) by Chef Edward Esmero, you get to wield the carving knife, with Chef Maria Sevillano and David Piera Félez from 10Vetas, one of Spain’s most respected jamon brands, as your instructors of the evening. Did we mention it’s free-flowing jamon, too?

10Vetas Jamon Carving is happening 18 October 2014, 5pm-9pm, at My Little Tapas Bar, 42 Club Street, Singapore 069420. For more information, see here, and call 6223 8048 for reservations.

For those looking to do good – Hot and Heavy with The Cuban Brothers

There are many types of corporate social responsibility, and we think we like Chris’ Café’s version best. These guys are bringing the Cuban Brothers in to raise funds for non-governmental organizations like The Liger Charitable Foundation in Cambodia (education) and local Nusantara Development Initiative (women’s empowerment and environment). With Bar-Roque Grill, Oxwell and Co, and Tippling Club providing the food and beverage, it’s going to be an awesome evening of funk soul music and dancing.

Hot and Heavy with The Cuban Brothers is happening 18 October 2014, Gillman Barracks, 9 Lock Road, Singapore 108973. For more information and tickets, see website.
