Top 5 Things to Do This Week: 6 to 12 October 2014

A beach party, a barrel of laughs, a classic ballet from the heart of West End, and TWO boozy festivals – this is going to be an epic week. Check out our top 5 picks of happenings all around town this week:

For ballet lovers – Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake

Opening the Esplanade’s da:ns festival 2014, this award-winning interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake hits our shores for the very first time since its London Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 1995. Known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake blends dance, humour, character comedy and mime, transforming one of ballet’s best-loved stories into a powerful, stylish narrative of our time.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is running 9-12 October 2014, Thu-Sat 8pm, Sat & Sun 2pm, at Esplanade Theatre, 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981. For more information and tickets, see SISTIC.

For the beer chuggers – Oktoberfest Asia

Back after a successful run last year, Oktoberfest Asia is probably the closest we’ll ever get to the real thing without flying to Munich. The organizers are bringing in some of Bavaria’s finest breweries (Schneider Weisse, Paulaner, and Weihenstephan), gourmet Bavarian food specially curated by Weisse Brauhaus in Munich, a true blue München band, and the world-renowned Original Hofbrauhaus Show. So break out lederhosen and the dirndl, and join in the festivities – prost!

Oktoberfest Asia is happening 9-11 October 2014, Thu-Fri 5pm, Sat 3pm, at Marina at Keppel Bay, 2 Keppel Bay Vista, Singapore 098382. For more information and tickets, see website.

For those who can take a joke – Kings & Queen of Comedy Asia

Expect more than 2 hours of belly-aching laughter induced by 6 hand-picked comedians from 3 different countries at Singapore’s leading stand-up comedy show. Featuring top-notch comedians like our very own Kumar and Fakkah Fuzz, Ted Alexandro from the US and Jonathan Atherton from Australia, we expect their two-night run to be sold out so snag those tickets quick! Note that the show is rated R18 for mature content.

Kings & Queen of Comedy Asia is happening 10-11 October 2014, 9pm, at Esplanade Concert Hall, 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981. For more information and tickets, see SISTIC.

For the beach party people – Illumi Nation

Get in on Asia’s first-ever glow in the dark paint party at Siloso Beach. Headliners of this rave include some of the best electronic dance music DJs – Dada Life, Martin Solveig, and Bingo Players, but we suggest heading down earlier to catch up-and-coming acts like Dutch DJ Made in June and Rave Republic. Tip: wear white for optimal glow, but make sure it’s something you don’t mind getting dirty ’cause you’ll be covered in a psychedelic whirl of colours by the end of the night.

Illumi Nation is happening 11 October 2014, 6pm-3am, at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. For more information and tickets, see website.

For the sake enthusiasts – Sake Festival Singapore

The Japanese will tell you that Japanese food tastes the best in autumn, and that applies to sake too. Organized by Orihara Shoten, the festival will see more than 200 types of seasonal sakes brought in from Japan, and master brewers from the participating breweries will be pouring your samples. So head down and learn more about sake from the people who take great care in making it. Oh, and your $60 ticket includes a $30 cash voucher for sake purchase so you’ll definitely be bringing some home!

Sake Festival Singapore is happening 12 October 2014, 1pm-5pm, at Summit 1, Level 3, Suntec Convention Centre, 1 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039593. For more information and tickets, see SISTIC.
