What Is Sex? 红楼梦

In each of us, there exists a void—a deep, bottomless emptiness. And we are all trying to fill this void. Twelve highly desirable men, all from different backgrounds, are engaged by well-heeled female clients to read Dream of the Red Chamber to them. Gathered in this peculiar book club, the twelve discover that the female characters’ emotional turmoil—the passion, beauty, pain, agony, wisdom and forgiveness—could actually be their own.

Secret desires are revealed, but the line between truth and fiction is blurred. Will the public masks they wear cause them to forget their true selves? And as the drama unfolds, we rediscover our own true selves as well.
With What is Sex?, celebrated Hong Kong director Edward Lam presents his innovative and subversive take on the Chinese classic Dream of the Red Chamber. This thoroughly modern theatrical adaptation is an exploration of men’s unceasing desire to fill the void in each of us.

What is Sex? is the concluding instalment of Lam’s Four Great Classics series, following What is Man? (inspired by Water Margin and presented in Huayi 2008), What is Fantasy? (inspired by Journey To The West) and What is Success? (inspired by Romance of the Three Kingdoms)

Advisory: This performance contains some coarse language and mature content. Recommended for audiences aged 16 years and above.
