5 Places to spend Valentine’s Day to avoid cliché couples

As I like to say, Valentine’s Day is a commercial invention for bad boyfriends to have one day to ‘try’ and make it up to their girlfriends by doing something super cheesy..You know the rules, buy roses, compose a sonnet…pay for an overpriced meal at some fancy place where it seems every table is for couples. Blaeh!

Anyway, this year for Valentine’s, if you aren’t partaking in the Valentine’s lovefest, why not spend an evening with good friends having some quality food, drinks at one of our 5 top selections for venues for private(ish) dining?…

Applicable of course both the chaps and the ladies :-)….

1) Brasserie Wolf (Robertson Walk) – Having just had dinner here last night for the umpteenth time, I felt compelled to include this venue as part of the selection because of their awesome 8-10 person wooden table in a privatized section at the back of the restaurant. (Picture below).

Helmed under Chef Claudio Sandri, the standard of cuisine at Brasserie Wolf is great. Whilst the full-time items of the menu are great choices for classic French/European dishes, be sure to try the specials of the night. They are always innovative and impressive! To make a reservation at Brasserie Wolf, call 6835-7818.

2) Palio at Hotel Michael, RWS –  A relatively recent addition to the Italian restaurant scene in Singapore. We’ve picked Palio for a few reasons. 1 – the food is dynamite….and 2 – you can get loud without feeling too guilty. On the bigger tables, you can easily get up to 14+ people.

All the tables are widely spaced so there’s privacy, and if you’re lucky they might just have one of their private rooms available. Meals designed for mass sharing and order lots of wine… Great wine list! To make a reservation, at Palio, call 65778888.

3) Hanayoshi –

Ah, the review of Hanayoshi is coming later this week as an entity in itself. Think shoeless tatami rooms, bunch of mates, lots of sake and some fantastic sashimi and wagyu beef. ‘Nuff said really. They have 3 private rooms so book soon. Best for 4-6 people.

I did spy some ‘fugu’ on the menu is you feel like being a bit of a daredevil ;-). In case you haven’t heard of it, fugu is the dish which if not prepared properly kills you in about 10-20 seconds. Not something you’d want to happen in front of your Mrs.

Hanayoshi is located at 21 Duxton Rd. For reservations, call 6225-5567.

4) Magic Carpet Lounge/Pasha –

If you’d like to read the more detailed review of Pasha, just click here.

What’s made us pick Pasha as a place for get together with your mates..Well firstly, there’s belly dancing, secondly, they have some very cool outdoor tented areas. Perfect for a group of friends to shoot the night breeze and chat. Aside from some yummy Moroccan tapas, you may want to order some shisha while you’re up there…When in Rome…well you now the rest….

You can also get some well-mad drinks here from the bar so it’s basically a one-stop-shop for your night.

To make a reservation, call 67237117.

5) The newly-opened Exchange at Marina Bay serving up some pretty spiffing Aussie cuisine in the heart of the CBD. They also have a ma-hu-sive drinks menu so might be a good one for your corporate afterwork get-together.

The Exchange is located at Asia Square Tower One 8 Marina View #01-05 Singapore 018960. To make a reservation, call 6636 1200.

*Be warned though, for their private room there is a $1200 minimum spend (table of 10).

Happy Anti-Valentine’s Day ;-).

Not just one day, but spend as much time as you can throughout the year with the people you love and who love you and you’ll seldom be sad or feel alone .
