5 Things To Do In Singapore This Week: 7th To 13th October 2019
PUBLISHED October 6th, 2019 06:30 am
This year marks Singapore’s Bicentennial, and it’s only natural that we ask questions about our colonial past with Alfian Sa’at’s Merdeka. Feeling a little classy? Enjoy a lunchtime concert at the Asian Civilisations Museum or take a stroll through Patek Philippe’s grand watch exhibition. As the week comes to a close, head on down to Zouk and pump your fist in the air with world-renowned Hardstyle DJ Headhunterz before warming up your heart with a screening of The Cat Rescuers. You might even pick up a furry friend!
Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition
Collectors, aficionados and the general public can immerse themselves in the world of Patek Philippe, one of the last independent family-owned Genevan watchmaking companies. Feast your eyes on some of the very first portable timepieces from the mid-16th century crafted by Europe’s most gifted watchmakers to the “Patek Philippe Collection”, which offers a selection of the manufacture’s most splendid creations from 1839 to the present day. Notable horological masterpieces on display include the first Swiss wristwatch (1868) and some of the most famous Patek Philippe “super complications”.
Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition is happening from 28 September to 13 October 2019 at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands Singapore, 10 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018956. Admission is free and open to public.
Merdeka / 獨立 /சுதந்திரம்
Written by the award-winning Alfian Sa’at in collaboration with up-and-coming playwright Neo Hai Bin, this provocative and moving new play examines how Singapore’s history and humanity have been shaped – and shattered – by the forces of colonialism. Six inquisitive youths form a group to examine the country’s colonial legacy, utilising forgotten texts, artefacts, and re-enactments, to better understand the nightmare of subjugation and the dream of self-determination. Why is the beginning of colonialism celebrated instead of the end? Has Singapore has truly undergone a process of decolonisation to gain independence?
Merdeka / 獨立 /சுதந்திரம் is happening from 10 October 2019 onwards at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre @ WILD RICE, Funan Mall, Singapore 179105. Click here for ticketing information.
