This week, look forward contemporary art exhibitions featuring visually and conceptually stunning works that’ll leave you in awe. For something a little more lighthearted, take a step back in time and remember the thrill of childhood spontaneity through film or a participatory theatre workshop.
 Eureka! An Ode to Invention
The young and the young at heart will enjoy this short film programme by the ArtScience Museum that captures the magic of invention through the eyes of child inventors. ArtScience on Screen: Ode to Invention takes us along on the journey of young and unlikely heroes as they charge fearlessly with their ideas, reminding us that we’re never too young (or old!) to start dreaming big. This week, catch Litterbugs (2016) and Hoverboard (2012).

Cadenhead Whisky Tasting
This Tuesday, take a tour of whiskies young and old with Campbeltown native Cameron McGeachy of Cadenhead, one of Scotland’s oldest whisky producers and independent bottlers. The tasting set (from S$99.73 for four drams of 30ml) contains four interesting tipples ranging from the Cadenhead Balblair 8 YO 2011 Refill Sherry Hogsheads to the Cadenhead Creation 36 YO 1980 Rich, Fruity, Sherry 44.5%.

Contemplate the Meaning of Art and Life
If you’ve been in a reflective mood to question life, catch National Gallery Singapore’s exhibition An Exercise of Meaning in a Glitch Season. What does it mean to exist as an individual and as a collective, particularly in the wake of this pandemic? Eleven artists display multimedia works that embody processes of contemplation and highlight local articulations of this universal question. Part of the initiative Proposals for Novel Ways of Being, a response by 12 local art institutions, independent art spaces and collectives to a world irrevocably changed by COVID-19.
An Exercise of Meaning in a Glitch Season is happening now until 21 February 2021 at the National Gallery Singapore. General admission is free for Singaporeans and PRs and can be booked here.
Jump Headfirst Into Participatory Theatre
Li Xie‘s play The Lesson, which premiered at Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) back in 2015, is back by popular demand. Now adapted by Kok Heng Leun into an online participatory theatre experiment, the audience is presented with a scenario where the city made plans for the development of an old housing estate. The play asks questions about the forces that shape our space and the possibility of heterotopia, questions that you as the audience will get the chance to answer and explore, shaping the outcome of the play.
The Lesson — An Online Experiment by Drama Box will be streamed here on 12 September 2020 at 8pm. Audience participants to register on a pay-as-you-wish basis here by 9 September 2020, and may also attend pre- and post-shows from 11-13 September 2020.
Be Mesmerised By Symmetrical Paper Sculptures
The first Singaporean artist to be shortlisted for the LOEWE Craft Prize, Ashley Yeo‘s solo exhibition Gentle Daylight is an enthralling series of paper sculptures of subtle colours, textures, and symmetrical patterns. Exploring geometry, precision, and the spiritual power of simple materials, these structural but delicate forms are a study in contrasts and speak to the abstract, generalised vulnerability that this exhibition aims to distil to the audience.
