Agung Rai Museum of Art

One of the younger museums of the region, the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) officially opened on the 9th June 1996 by Professor Dr. Ing Wardiman Djojonegoro, Minister of Education & Culture of The Republic of Indonesia. Having an intense love of art and its preservation, this museum was established.

The museum itself stretches over several acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. There are even villas for guests to stay as well as two restaurants. The museum itself offers a collection of paintings and sculptures collected both regionally and internationally.

The collection includes the works not just of Balinese artists, but of other Indonesian painters such as Affandi, Sudjono, Hendra Gunawan, Srihadi Soedarsono and Abas Alibasyah. There are also works by foreign artists who drew inspiration from the natural beauty and culture of Bali. Included are paintings by Rudolph Bonnet, Arie Smit, Le Mayeur de Merpres, Wilem Hofker, Antonio Blanco, Theo Meier, Donald Friend, Hans Snel and others.

When Joel’s not partaking in one of his shameless eating sessions, he likes to think of himself as a sponge – absorbing the mysteries and beauty of our world – be it through a good book or a wacky jaunt in a foreign country.
