Contemporary Asian Landscapes Solo exhibition by Chankerk

[EY Asean Art Outreach](http://www.ey.com/SG/en/About-us/Corporate-Responsibility/EY-asean-art-outreach) is delighted to present Contemporary Asian Landscapes, a solo exhibition by Malaysian artist, Chankerk. Held from 24 June – 16 October at EY Art Gallery, the exhibition marks the 19th edition of its art programme and was conceived in collaboration with Chan Hampe Galleries.

Chankerk’s urban scenes of our cosmpolitan city encapsulate sites of cultural and historic interest, are easily recognisable to a Singapore audience. The city is presented in a state of flux, depicted on inclined planes and with quick, disjointed brushstrokes, they evoke the sense of dislocation and uncertainty, reflecting the tension that exists between the past and the present in Singapore and its evolving geographic landscape and social climate.

The artist travels beyond the local landscape and expands this series with works presenting far-flung Asian locales: Bali (Indonesia), Osaka (Japan), and Siem Reap (Cambodia). With energetic and spontaneous brushstrokes, Chankerk encapsulates the unique character of each environment with sensivity in these expressive paintings. Their distorted perspectives and exaggerated scales evoke a sense of monumentality and lightness in the rich landscape.

Chankerk’s work employs energetic, impulsive, bold brushstrokes to communicate a sense of dynamism and fluxus within the context of urbanization. His paintings are marked by spontaneity and immediacy, informed by first-hand observations. Diffused, abstract depictions of local shop houses, streets and skyscrapers reflect the rapid changes across the Singaporean landscape, rendering familiar scenes as homogenous urban territories.

Chankerk completed his Diploma in Oil Painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. In 1994, he co-founded Impasto Art Junction, a painting center for adults, and in 2005 he founded My Art Space at Istana Park, where he teaches painting and art appreciation. He was also chairman of Sentosa Artists Village from 2001 to 2004. His works are included in the collections of OCBC Bank and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Contemporary Asian Landscapes runs from 24 June – 16 October 2015 at EY Art Gallery, located at One Raffles Quay, North Tower, Level 18. The gallery is open to public on Tuesdays, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. by appointment only. The event’s opening night will be on Wednesday, 24 June 2015, and continue until 16 October 2015 at EY Art Gallery.
