Dramatised Reading Contemporary & New Wave

The playwrights in this reading are not afraid to challenge expectations and conventions. This reading features seminal plays from their body of work that marked a new approach which challenged and subverted dramatic conventions and forms.
Natalie Hennedige’s Nothing is a dark but whimsical observation of love and death which is at once epic in its scope and intimate in its portrayal of the dynamics of human relationships. It was named Production of the Year at the Life! Theatre Awards in 2008.
In Temple, Hennedige once again departs from conventional plot structures to delve into human fear and weakness. It was first commissioned by Singapore Arts Festival 2008 and Napoli Teatro Festival Italia 2008. Temple sees the invention of a mythological universe where all the quarters of the world are at odds.. This multilayered work opens itself to an exploration of the various notions of a “temple”.
Veteran playwright Leow Puay Tin’s Family traces the life of Tan Neo, a woman who comes to Singapore to start a new life, through a series of monologues and vignettes. Finding herself the matriarch of a house of widows, Tan Neo begins to realise the pain and sacrifice that forges a strong family. The plays presented in this reading are selected excerpts from each script.
