Haw Par Villa

If you’ve always been intrigued by the rich mythos surrounding Chinese culture and folklore, you oughta head for Haw Par Villa.

Established in 1937, the themed Haw Par Villa is most famous for its unnerving, and sometimes gruesome, depictions of Chinese folklore’s 10 Courts of Hell. For those who wish for more… decorous exhibits, shall we say, one can check out the depictions of Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms; and even the statues of mythological figures such as the Laughing Buddha and East Asian deity of mercy, Guanyin.

With the Haw Par Villa MRT Station (CC25) opened in 2011, the Haw Par Villa’s now pretty accessible – so it’s a lot easier to visit the place that seemed to give children of the ’70s and ’80s nightmares!

Admission is free
Phone: 6872 2780
Opening hours: Daily 9am – 7pm

When Joel’s not partaking in one of his shameless eating sessions, he likes to think of himself as a sponge – absorbing the mysteries and beauty of our world – be it through a good book or a wacky jaunt in a foreign country.
