Island Nation

Island Nation is a project centered on telling the stories of Singaporeans who once lived on the southern islands of Singapore. This photographic exhibition aims to capture the living history of the southern islands of Singapore, uncovering beautiful and forgotten narratives, through text, videos and images.

Contrary to popular belief, Singapore is not one island, but comprised of more than 60 islands at one point in time. As Singapore progressed economically, many of offshore islands were zoned for specific purposes, and its residents were relocated to mainland Singapore. Island Nation aims to highlight the stories of these islanders, and weave them into the broader Singaporean narrative of nationhood.

Supported by the Singapore Memory Project’s (SMP) irememberSG Fund, Island Nation will run from now till 28 June 2015 at Level 10, Promenade, National Library Building, during the library’s opening hours of 10.00am – 9:00pm. The exhibition is open to the public and no registration is required.

In addition to the exhibition, the team behind this exhibition will also be hosting a talk, tour, and screening of their documentary that will take place from 10:00am – 12:00pm on Sunday, 21 June 2015, at Level 5, Possibility Room, National Library Building. The Island Nation exhibition is part of the SIngapore Memory Project.
