Pickat – A new mobile app rival to HungryGoWhere?

The media landscape of Singapore is changing: everything we want these days is online or in app form. Let’s face it, when was the last time you actually used a paperback directory? When it comes to food and technology, there is little more that gets people more excited here in Singapore.

One new application that us Nomads have just had the pleasure of discovering is Pickat, an Android and IOS location-based app that’s just been launched here in Singapore. Think of it as Hungrygowhere and Foursquare rolled into one… only much better! In essence Pickat is a simple location-based social application that allows you to discover, create and share interesting places with people around you. The content is entirely user-generated so you can see what people are genuinely saying about various places like restaurants, bars, tourist attractions, exhibitions etc etc. So…..

STEP 1: Download the app (app store / google playstore)

Once you’ve downloaded it, you can sign in via facebook or twitter and start picking… Easy peasy.

STEP 2: Start making picks

Think of this as Pickat’s version of ‘checking in’. In the app, just click on the little orange pickat icon at the bottom right of the screen to start…

When you ‘pick’ a place, upload a quick photo, write a short review and attach it to a theme (eg. Best Sushi in Singapore!)…

STEP 3: Attach a theme

The themes aspect is what I like the most about Pickat and what really makes it unique. In a way, it help you compile awesome lists for you to share with your friends, colleagues and followers. When you pick a place, you can attach it to a theme – a sort of label of why you remember the venue…

For example, if you check out we humble City Nomads on Pickat (cough cough hint hint, find us in the ‘top pickers’ section), we’ve already started creating the following themes. If you click on them, you’ll be able to see which places we’ve attached to the theme…

  • Best coffee shops (eg. Loysel’s Toy, Selfish Gene Cafe, Sarnies, The Plains Cafe, Smitten, Kith Cafe etc etc)
  • Top Italian restaurants
  • Sushi Sushi Sushi
  • It’s Taco time! Mexican restaurants in SG
  • Sweets for my sweet
  • Sunday brunch anyone?!
  • I love meat
  • Best Bars of Singapore
  • Healthy lunch spots around Orchard
  • The Unimpressives (the naughty list of the places we’ve been to that, well, were frankly unimpressive. Duh!)
  • Best of Boat Quay Restaurants and Bars

We’re updating these themes and creating new ones every day. So every time we discover an awesome new bar or restaurant, you can be sure it’ll be up straight away on our timeline – with photos, and a shot blurb about what’s good there.

As a user, you can create your own theme or you can attach a ‘pick’ to someone else’s theme.

STEP 4: Share the love

And, of course, it is integrated with Facebook and Twitter. Say you’ve made an awesome theme about your favourite Xiao Long Bao restaurants and want to share it with everybody. Boom, click a button and it gets posted on your Facebook and/or Twitter pages. You can also share every time you ‘pick’ somewhere new.

This Facebook and Twitter integration helps you to find your friends and follow each other in your picks and themes. Plus, If you’re looking for random inspiration, check out the ‘Top Pickers’ or the ‘Public Newsfeed’ and see what other people using the app are checking out and recommending (or not). Enjoy!

To download Pickat for free, vist the app store or google playstore.
