Singapore HeritageFest 2014

Singapore HeritageFest 2014 (SHF) takes you on a discovery
of Singapore’s many islands with this year’s theme, Our Islands, Our Home. The 11th edition
of the festival encourages Singaporeans to re-acquaint themselves with our island nation,
through lesser known tales of our trading past. SHF 2014 also shines the spotlight on our
migrant forefathers and why they chose to call this island home, while sharing more about
the various cultures and traditions they brought with them.

Singaporeans and visitors can expect a myriad of activities island-wide with 11
Festival Hubs and over 60 programmes held between 18 and 27 July 2014. Besides
presenting multiple heritage touch-points, these hubs and programmes provide unique and
in-depth ways to experience our history. Together, they allow Singaporeans to better
connect with and reflect on our shared heritage and memories.

The 11 Festival Hubs will explore Singapore’s living heritage brought to our islands
by our forefathers, from the different faith-related practices and festivals embraced and
celebrated across various ethnic groups; the good old kampong days and how they have
evolved with Singapore’s progress as a nation; to traditional healing practices and how they
are still being practised today.

Complementary programmes offer festival-goers immersive, first-hand experiences
of our heritage. One can look forward to tracing our island heritage through special boat
excursions to St John’s, Lazarus and Saringat Islands; a night of Nanyin (‘Songs from the
South’) at Kusu Island; as well as a visit to some of Singapore’s earliest lighthouses dating
back to 1885. Festival participants can also sign up for the many guided trails to learn about
the trades and way of life of Singapore’s early immigrants – from their places of worship, to
clan associations and old shop-houses.

Truly a festival for the community, by the community, SHF 2014 promises to excite
and inspire the creation of new shared memories and experiences of our home. For more
