Three years is a long time between visits. The last time Sunday Social Market set up at the Sing See Soon nursery on Simei Lane, it was a different era of outdoor markets. This 9 and 10 May, the market returns, but this time it’s also a send-off.
The Simei site is being demolished. What’s happening on these two days isn’t a revival so much as a closing ceremony, and the programming reflects that. The bar has been handed to Santai, East Coast’s no-fuss cocktail bar. The sound system is powered by VOID with a six-hour daily DJ set curated by Blackout Agency and Shutter Rhythms. The DPLMT collective will run graffiti sessions on the nursery walls themselves, which feels appropriate: let people leave a mark on something that won’t exist much longer.
The market floor holds over 30 local brands, and it’s worth arriving with time to spare. Jewellery from Cerca Bracelets and Beadztiful sits alongside the upcycled timber pieces of Timber Actually, whose work traces a full journey from raw local logs to finished objects. Intimate Moments Aroma brings its range of aromatherapy products into the mix, and The Green and Purple Movement rounds out the floor, an urban farm that grows sustainable local produce while creating meaningful work opportunities for both the disabled and elderly communities. It falls on Mother’s Day weekend, which the organisers have leaned into without overstating. The range is broad enough that it works whether you’re shopping for someone or just for yourself.
Food runs on a two-day rotation: Cafe Melba handles lunch on Saturday, and The Goodburger food truck rolls in on Sunday for the plant-based crowd. There are free flowers tied to vendor purchases, a lucky draw, and a full site-wide clearance from Sing See Soon Simei itself. If you’ve ever wanted their plants at significantly reduced prices, this is your last opportunity. The site won’t be there after this.
