Top 5 things to do in Singapore this week: 5th – 11th May 2014

In this week’s top pick of events we have a breathtaking show from T.H.E Dance Company, one of the hottest contemporary dance groups in the region; we get a wake up call and unicorn moment courtesy of Checkpoint Theatre, we lick our art chops for the arrival of the Guggeinheim’s exhibition No Country, and revel in the creative and artisan juices that are flowing through Singapore with a quadruple bill of markets and showcases. And of course…we show some major love to the mamma in our life this Mother’s Day. We’ve got it all covered, right here:

1. Catch some awe-inspiring dance with As it Fades

One of Singapore’s most exciting home-grown dance outfits – T.H.E Dance Company, brings back its landmark production, As it Fades, hailed in 2011 as “one of the top three performances in Singapore”. If you haven’t seen any works by the superbly talented Kuik Swee Boon (peep our interview with him here) before, this is an excellent place to start.

As it Fades is showing on 8th – 10th May at SOTA Drama Theatre, 1 Zubir Said Drive, Singapore, 227968. For more information and ticketing see SISTIC here.

2. Embrace a #UnicornMoment!

Time for a bit of clarity in life? The ‘it’ might be that you need a #Unicorn Moment. Combining the craft of theatre with the immediacy of the Internet, having kicked off with a series of online video podcasts, the live theatre show #UnicornMoment is a courageous and honest exploration of what it means to find happiness, meaning and your own way in life, amidst the push and pull of outside voices and societal standards.

#UnicornMoment is showing from 8th – 10th May at Esplanade, 1 Esplanade Dr, Singapore, 038981. For more information and ticketing see SISTIC here.

3. Get your art fix at No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia

Art lovers! This has to be one of the hottest art exhibitions of the year, having originated from Guggeinheim NYC. Featuring work by 16 artists and collectives representing some of the most compelling and innovative voices in South and Southeast Asia today, expect to be stimulated by the region’s shifting spectrum of creative practices across painting, sculpture, photography, video, works on paper and more in this critically acclaimed exhibition.

No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia is showing at The Centre for Contemporary Art at Gillman Barracks, Block 43, Malan Road, Gillman Barracks, Singapore, 109443. For more information see here.

4. Support the artisan movement at this week’s markets and fleas

A big, bad wolf of a fashion flea and artisan market at F1 Pit Building, our favourite monthly art and design market MAAD , spanking new showcase of the creative and cool at our favourite new hideout Life is Beautiful by the name of The Big Easy plus a very cool sounding curated showcase of local artists by the folks at online gallery Thieves Market – let’s all give some love to the local craftsmen of tomorrow and the thriving indie scene in a quadruple bill of showcase events this week!

The above events are taking place at various locations across Singapore. For information on dates and locations please see links above.

5. Treat your mamma right this Mother’s Day

And finally how could we not mention Mother’s Day! Yes, the grand dame in your life deserves some recognition, respect and a whole lotta lovin’ this Mother’s Day. But if you’re scratching your head thinking, what the hell am I going to do with her? Fear not, we’ve rounded up some answers in our guide to Mother’s Day 2014 here.
