Bynd Artisan – Holland Village Atelier

The Goy Liang Book-Making Company had its first true home in 1947 when it was set up in a little shophouse along Mohamed Sultan Road. As a family-run business that served a genuine need, it gradually grew beyond the boundaries of Singapore and Malaysia.

Through the intervening years, the business of bookbinding moved progressively with the advent of technology. Yet at its heart, each and every book had its beginning much like in the old days – designed and hand- made by a small band of craftsmen who grew up in and with the trade.

Today, the company’s spirit of artisanal excellence lives on through their work, as Bynd Artisan celebrates the joy of traditional bookmaking and leather crafting. It is for today’s thinkers, dreamers and doers that we hope to write our history through the remarkable output of Singapore’s greatest practicing craftsmen.

When Joel’s not partaking in one of his shameless eating sessions, he likes to think of himself as a sponge – absorbing the mysteries and beauty of our world – be it through a good book or a wacky jaunt in a foreign country.
