FYR Up The Grill For Sunday Brunch

With a tropical climate all year round, weekend get-togethers and summery barbecues are always fun in Singapore. Well, Fyr Cycene Ond Drinc’s fortnightly Sunday brunch is all that with ice cold beer on tap and boisterous live music – a recipe for a perfect Sunday afternoon, am I right?

It’s hard to mention Fyr without talking about their signature Caveman Supper – a carnivore’s dream sharing platter that’s lit on fire (the food, we mean, not the plate) at the table. At their Sunday Brunch, the Mini Caveman Supper ($60) comes without the flamboyant showmanship, but still gets a kiss of the flame from an outdoor open-fire barbecue. However, the two-person sharing platter is nothing but mini, coming with a medley of meats ranging from lamb, beef and pork ribs to pork collar and chicken thigh. The 150 grams of suckling pig is definitely the highlight of the of this mountain of protein, with its addictive crackling skin and well-seasoned, tender meat. Take our advice and order another portion of the Beef Short Ribs ($6 for 60g);  although it’s already part of the caveman supper, you’ll want more of the juicy, fall-off-the-bone morsels.

Another additional must-order is the Beef Brisket ($6 for 60g), unassuming cubes of meat that postively bursts with umami. The marbled beef, flavourful spices, and char of the grill all combine beautifully to form an unforgettable mouthful. Transform your meal into a surf-and-turf with the Slipper Lobster ($8) or Snapper Fillet ($5 for 60g), a fresh seafood break from the heavy red meats. Sides such as the Garlic Skewer ($2), Shiitake Skewer ($4), and Quail Egg Skewer ($2) are also available, transformed from humble ingredients to delicious morsels under the heat of the grill.

Hungry for Fyr’s usual menu? Their classic Beef Ribeye ($6 for 60g) and Lamb Steak ($6 for 60g) are also on the list of options, a great choice if you’re a fan of these familiar, tried-and-tested flavours. Enhancing each bite are a wide array of nine different sauces, all house-made with fresh herbs, striking ingredients, and Asian spices. Crowd favourites are the Peppercorn, Chilli Coulis, and Belachan, but decide on your own with the free flow sauce station.

Sauces aside, nothing goes better with barbecued meats than beer, so grab a pint of Pure Blonde ($10) or Peroni ($12) to wash down all the meats. Alternatively, wines, prosecco, and cocktails are also going at $10 each, so you don’t have to worry about going thirsty. The Frozen Caveman Grog ($10/ $35 for sharing jug), an icy blend of rum, pineapple, and lemongrass, came highly recommended, and indeed, it was a much-welcomed respite from the blazing heat. If you prefer to keep your Sunday alcohol-free, the Strawberry and Mint Tea ($3) and Grapefruit and Lime Soda ($3) are great refreshers as well.

Sunday brunch at Fyr is family friendly as well, if you need a place that caters to the littlies. There’s a kid’s menu and a host of activities to keep them occupied, from “caveman drawings” to a ball pit. Adults who also want to join in on the fun will find darts, bean bag toss, and even chapteh in the alley next to the restaurant. To keep the celebratory atmosphere alive and guests grooving, jazz band The Pocket Watchers will be playing their tunes all day long.

With good food, cold drinks, and cheerful vibes, Fyr Cycene Ond Drinc is a great place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
