5 Things To Do In Singapore This Week: 17th May to 23rd May 2021

Lap Lip 2021 Lights Up The Sky For Hari Raya

Hari Raya might not be what we expected this year, but the Malay Heritage Centre puts on an exhibition that’ll remind you of celebratory times. Lap Lip 2021, like its name, is a neon light installation by the Malay Heritage Centre that illuminates the sky. Hari Raya Bazaar sounds accompany this enormous fixture where you’re free to take pictures and relive your greatest Hari Raya celebrations.

Lap Lip 2021 takes place from 9 May to 13 June, 10am – 10pm at the Malay Heritage Centre Fountain, 85 Sultan Gate, Singapore 198501. Entry is free. 

Experience a Journey From Home

Illusionist and mentalist Scott Silven delights audiences with The Journey, a stylish performance set against the backdrop of the pandemic. Like his previously sold out world tour, At The Illusionist’s Table, Silven uses stunning visual and mind tricks to wow audiences in this immersive production. Grappling with concepts like social isolation, space, and time, The Journey reminds us of connectedness, despite being six feet apart. 

The Journey takes place online from 18 May to 30 May at 7pm. Tickets priced at S$40, available here

Go To A FanTEAstic Carnival

Here’s the tea about tea – Singaporeans love it. In tribute to our rich tea culture, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre is hosting It’s FanTEAstic, an online carnival that showcases Chinese tea culture, its significance, and evolution, past to present. Take part in fun quizzes and games all about tea. Then, explore a virtual marketplace packed with 20 local tea brands, which offer everything from traditional Chinese blends to trendy kombuchas.

It’s FanTEAstic! 大家来找茶 takes place from 15 May to 12 June online for free. 

Travel Back to 1960s Singapore

In 1965, Singapore gained its independence, and marked a time of euphoria for its citizens. Almost 60 years later, author of award-winning blog The Long and Winding Road, Jerome Lim takes you on a trip down memory lane to the cultural and societal changes that emerged during Singapore’s 60s and 70s. Complete with video clips found from the National Archives of Singapore and music by the M’Ode Wind Quintet, enjoy our tale of history and heritage.

Follow A Black & White Art Film

Life is never quite black and white – and local visual artist Tang Ling Nah knows it. Dreaming in Black & White follows Tang’s trials and tribulations in Singapore as a female artist. Through interviews, conversations, dance and animation segments, Tang pushes an important message for everyone to consider: don’t be afraid to have a dream.
