5th Singapore National Sommelier Competition 2014

It is time once again, for the top Singaporean Sommeliers from the best Restaurants, Wine Bars
and Bistros to come together and vie for both representation and bragging rights in the quest for
Sommellerie excellence in Singapore.

Organized by the 4 previous Champions and judged by a panel of International Sommeliers helmed
by Master Sommelier Yohann Jousselin from Hong Kong, the participants will write, talk, smell and
taste their way through a series of tests which include Wine & Spirit Blind Tastings, Food & Wine
Pairing, Sparkling Wine Service, Cocktail Creation and Decanting. The eventual 3 Finalists will then
come together on-stage for a ‘live’ Final Round witnessed by Sommeliers, Beverage Professionals
and Wine Educators from all the country.

This year’s competition sees an exciting cast of Sommeliers such as Fazil Mohammed from hattedchef
Luke Mangan’s Salt Sky Bar & Grill, Matthew Chan from Bacchanalia, voted Best New
Restaurant in 2014 by the World Gourmet Summit and The Peak Magazine, Ervin Tang, 2nd
Runner-Up in South-East Asia Best Sommelier Competition and 2 local Sommeliers, Vincent Kwong
and Alexander Peh flying in from Hong Kong just to compete for the rights to represent.

Gerald Lu, Champion in 2010 and Vice-President of the Sommelier Association of Singapore says,
‘Singapore’s National Sommelier Competition is the biggest event for every Singaporean
Sommelier. We study, train, practice, debate and taste hundreds of beverages a year just to
prepare ourselves to be the best Singapore has to offer. The bar just goes higher each year, with
each Champion going on to compete on an international level and bringing back the experience to
mentor the new participants. It is THE event that defines the true spirit of Sommellerie.’

Mark your date for the 5th Singapore National Sommelier Competition and catch these
Sommeliers ‘live’ on Monday, 27th October 2014 at the Tanglin Club from 3pm – 530pm.
