Hotel Review: Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor Redefines Contemporary Living In The Heart of Bangkok

If you ever find yourself in Bangkok in need of a fully-serviced residence at a pretty perfect location, you might want to take a look at Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor, a mere hour’s drive from both the Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Muang Airport.

Location & Space

Towering above one of Bangkok’s most popular expat district, the serviced residence sits squarely on Sukhumvit Road, just a 10-minute walk from Thonglor BTS station and many of Bangkok’s top restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment offerings. It’s one of our favourite areas to stay, seeing as it’s home to cocktail haunts like Rabbit Hole and Backstage Bar. The facade isn’t the most extravagant thing you’ll see, but it maintains a clean confident charm. Inside, the spacious lobby is stylishly decked in black and white, the front desk staff friendly and ready to assist.

Rooms

We’re quite the digital nomad, so to have all the comforts and luxuries one would want while working away from home is an instant plus. Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor offers 262 well-appointed residences across their categories, from cleverly-designed studios to one- or two-bedroom layouts. Since all apartments include a fully-equipped kitchen, washing machine, and home entertainment system, it’s more or less just differences in size to consider.

We walked into our one-bedroom apartment, spanning 53 to 60 sqm, to find two cold coconuts in our fridge, and a tropical fruit basket on the table. It’s elegantly furnished with contemporary furniture and modern trappings, and we soon felt thoroughly at home. It’s the kind of place we want to retire to after a long day out, into the warmly lit bathroom and the jacuzzi-bathtub (eco-friendly shower amenities!) Homebody-types can make use of the kitchen to prepare simple meals — groceries can be purchased at the supermarket just opposite the property, and you’ll find all the equipments, glassware, and crockery you need in your residence.

Like in your own home, the living and dining rooms are designed to be separate. The designer king-size bed is suitable for a single executive or a travel pair, and a home entertainment system and LCD TV means catching up on movies on HBO is more exciting than ever. All apartments are fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows, and we’re instantly pampered with view of the metropolis below.

Facilities & Services

Start your day with a good workout at the well-equipped fitness centre: free weights, weighted machines, treadmills, and ellipticals — everything we needed to stay in shape in this land of food. You can wash up at the shower room (there are lockers for your valuables) or sweat it out in the steamy sauna. Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor’s ninth floor infinity pool is gorgeous, particularly at sunset when pink and orange light reflects off the city’s skyscrapers. There is also a jacuzzi just by the pool, so you can enjoy a strong jet massage while looking out onto the skyline.

Need to get out of the property? A tuk-tuk service is able to take you to Thonglor BTS Station (or nearby attractions such as Villa Market and J Avenue) at a moment’s notice. We took a look inside and these are clean, spacious, and best of all, complimentary.

F&B

Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor only has one dining establishment, but it’s very tastefully done up. We enjoyed the breakfast at the White Cafe Restaurant, which featured a surprisingly large variety of Japanese dishes: fermented soy beans, tofu, Japanese rice, and tsukemono. Western choices include the usual sausages, eggs, and bacon, but darn if they weren’t executed to perfection. The seating inside is beautiful in the morning with plenty of natural lighting, but you can choose to sit outside by the pool. The restaurant serves up things like papaya salad, fried chicken winglets, and Thai fusion food throughout the day.

It’s never a dull moment here, where life all about living and comfort. Suitable for both short and long stays, it’s places like this that make the Thonglor area so attractive to stay in when in the big city.

Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor is located at No. 115 Sukhumvit 55, Thonglor, Sukhumvit Rd, Klongton Nua, Watthana, Bangkok. Rates start from USD$114 per night.
