Just Opened May 2021: New Restaurants and Bars in Singapore This Month

The merry month of May brings to us bountiful openings of restaurants, cafes, and bars. If you’re looking for some new flavours and aromas to enrapture and entice you, look no further than this list of new additions to Singapore‘s ever-growing F&B scene.

Restaurants

Tapas,24

We may not be able to travel to Barcelona, but Barcelona is coming to us. Come May, the legendary Tapas,24 is landing on our shores, helmed by none other than Catalonian chef Carles Abellán. Promising a buzzing atmosphere and top-notch tapas, the designer tapas label is notorious for the long snaking queue at its flagship outlet in Barcelona. Crowd favourites include the signature Bikini Sandwich (S$16) and sublime Huevos Estrellados (S$20) with thick-cut chips.

sen-ryo

sen-ryo Sushi

Established in Japan’s Tochigi, sen-ryo debuts on Orchard Road, bringing its repertoire of premium sushi handcrafted by shokunin (artisan chefs). With seafood from Toyosu Fish Market, Koshihikari rice from Aomori prefecture, and artisanal vinegar from Gifu prefecture, expect chef kiss-worthy creations like the signature sen-ryo Sushi (S$8.80) that don’t leave a hole in your wallet. Get hands-on with the DIY Hokkaido Uni (S$58) set, a Lion City exclusive, and wash it all down with a tipple from their extensive sake list featuring Ohime 2 Grain Hiire Yamadanishiki (S$238).

Permata Singapore

Helmed by Executive Chef Firdauz Nasir, Permata Singapore is bringing Nusantara cuisine, classy buffet style, to the historic Gedung Kuning with over 60 of its heritage dishes. Familiar flavours include Nasi Ulam, Nasi Kerabu, and Lemang, while Chef infuses modern twists to churn out savoury options like Wagyu Beef Rendang and Ayam Binjai. On-site stations include the live Noodles, Roti Jala, Carving, and Grill stations, as well as a premium Seafood on Ice station. Spice your feast up with their six hand-blended sambals, and sweeten it all at the end with their signature Buah Keluak Brownie.

Permata Singapore is located at 73 Sultan Gate, Gedung Kuning, Singapore 198497, p. +65 9082 9941. Open daily for lunch from 12pm-3pm, and dinner from 6pm-10pm. Priced at S$42++ (Mon-Thu) and S$48++ (Fri-Sun) for lunch, and S$52++ (Mon-Thu) and S$58++ (Fri-Sun).

Wanton Seng’s Eating House

The contemporary wanton noodle house Wanton Seng’s Eating House opens its largest outlet at Millenia Walk, serving up comfort food including its Signature Char Siu Noodles (S$12.80). Kick back with their tea-based tipples such as the lychee-heavy Ju Hua Highball (from S$18) or an Oolong Sour (S$18). To pair, there’s nothing quite like rich Braised Beef Tendons (S$12), or the classic Fried Boneless XO Sauce Chicken Wings (S$10). This might just be your next after-hours frequent in the heart of the city.

Abundance

A newcomer to the Redhill heartland, Abundance has already generated quite a following since its opening just over a week ago. Their Prawn Toast (S$9.50) and Niu Yolk Fried Rice (S$18) have become customer favourites. Miss Taiwan? Check out their sole dessert offering: Peanut Ice Cream Roll (S$6). Wash down the hearty grub with craft beers and cocktails on tap.

Qin

Brought to you by Tung Lok, Qin brings to the table an amalgamation of nostalgic flavours and culinary finesse in one of Singapore’s most historical districts. The restaurant sports a rustic Chinese vibe, and is home to dishes like Siphon Mushroom Tea (S$58), Canton Crisp (S$38), and Short Rib (S$68) with spicy peanut espuma. Elevate your night with Qin’s very own bar, presenting concoctions like The Roar made with Brass Lion’s Butterfly Pea Gin, or the Assam Whisky-based Tic Tac (both S$25).

Bringing a convivial drink-in concept – at retail prices – to Changi Airport is 8 by Bottles & Bottles. The homegrown wine and spirits retailer’s ever-evolving repertoire of wines include the likes of Eperosa from Barossa Valley and Bodegas Faustino, a 160 year-old winery in DOC Rioja. Look forward to an extensive selection of spirits boasts premium drams like HINE and Finnish Kyrö Gin, as well a comprehensive list of sake. Republic

Liquid history intertwine with mixology finesse as Ritz-Carlton’s Republic bar takes you back in time. Its list of tipples are garnished with anecdotal flavour as it draws stories from Singapore, the United Kingdom, the States, and Italy. Revel in the space, which  transports you back to the 60s with dark wood accents of the counter elevated by red Venetian glass details, and vintage spirits from the decade. Enjoy creations like Mythical Beast, inspired by Singapore’s Merlion, and Stardust, repping the Space Race.

Drunken Farmer

Natural wine bar and bistro Drunken Farmer has finally arrived in Singapore’s CBD. With fresh produce sourced from local farms, chef de cuisine Paul Albert uses slow fermentation to season his dishes with its own natural flavours. The Iberico Platter (S$26) boasts individually dry-cured cuts, while prawn heads and shells from the Blue Prawn Rolls (S$22) are used to create a rich prawn drip in the Squid Ink Crackers (S$13).

GudSht

Attention all Gen Y-ers, the folks over at GudSht are serving up generous shots of nostalgia. Its standalone bar at Cineleisure Orchard, decked out with retro-inspired neon lights, promises to conjure up memories of the good ol’ days with funky concoctions like Frooty Booty and Nacho Hombrè (both S$12). Bites feature their signature skewers (from S$2.50), Yakiniku Beef Cubes (S$16), and GudSht Wings (from S$10) in Asian Classic or Shoyu Pepper glaze.
