The Weekly Grub: 5 Things To Eat And Drink In Singapore This Week

Take your tastebuds on a trip around the world with this week’s list of delicious tidings. Raise your beer mugs to Oktoberfest with Brotzeit before making a pit stop in Japan with Kinki’s creative culinary flavours. Thirsty? Asia’s best bar has finally opened its doors again for elegant cocktails and delicious rice bowls to boot.

Jigger & Pony Reopens with Locally-Inspired Rice Bowls

The crown jewel of Asia’s bars features new munchies and an inspiring cocktail menu that barely got two weeks of air time before circuit breaker kicked in. Themed “The Decade Ahead” to inspire positive tidings (which we very much need), highlights includes the Eurasian culture inspired Devil’s Navy and a taste of Korea in Makgeolli-inspired Make It Rice, all priced at S$23 each. Their pop-up food concept On the High Rice will help line the stomach with local flavours like Beef Rendang (S$17) and keto-friendly Biryani (S$13) with cauliflower rice and kachumber raita.

Ellenborough Market Cafe Redefines Buffet Style

Embark on a gastronomic adventure at the newly reopened Ellenborough Market Cafe. Their new style of buffet feasting allows diners to order unlimited servings of authentic Peranakan, local and international dishes straight off the menu, so look forward to all-time favourites like kueh pie tee, ayam buah keluak, and the signature durian pengat with coconut chia seed pudding. We’d be happy with lunch (S$42++ per person), but dinner time (S$52++ per person) sees more premium goodies like fresh rock lobsters with chilli crab sauce and juicy grilled Black Angus striploin

Ellenborough Market Cafe is located at Swissôtel Merchant Court, Lobby Level, 20 Merchant Road, Singapore 058281, p. +65 6239 1847/1848. Opens daily from 12pm-3pm, 6pm-10pm. For reservations, call or email [email protected].

Get Kinki at Kinki Restaurant + Bar

Cheeky and inventive, the casual urban Japanese establishment’s new menu has put its own creative twist on popular comfort food using seasonal ingredients from the land of the rising sun. Take the Spicy Buffalo Katsu (S$28++) for example; imagine sinking your teeth into a succulent Nagano pork cutlet drizzled with a tingling Buffalo wings-inspired sauce. The Crusty Lamb Rack (S$45++) – a dinner-exclusive item – features alongside a sophisticated salad tossed in ginger dressing and topped with dehydrated ginger slices cooked in sugar syrup.

Back to the 80s with Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant

Step back in time with Wan Hao’s offerings of 1970s and 1980s Cantonese classics that also offer plenty of health boosting benefits. For one, the Mandarin Orange Crispy Deer Ribs (S$45++) utilise herbs to impart flavour and a balance of qi in the body while maintaining delicate citrus notes accentuated with the meat’s earthy aroma. Diners will find plenty of Vitamin B and fibre in the Traditional Braised Lamb with Mushrooms and Bamboo Shoot (S$55++), which – we’re told – lowers levels of bad cholesterol. Looking to indulge? The tender Wok-Fried Beef Roll with Enoki Mushroom and Black Pepper Sauce (S$38++) is basically layers of addictive wok hei.

Celebrate Oktoberfest with Brotzeit

Just because we can’t travel to Germany doesn’t mean we have to skip out on Oktoberfest this year. Toast with authentic Oktoberfestbier directly imported from Hofbräu while indulging in their festive menu. Expect a meaty feast in the style of the Bavarians and Germans, be it their Cold Roast Pork (S$16++) or Crispy Fried Pig Ears (S$12++), accompanied by a hearty Giant Pretzel (S$23++) stuffed with their custom-made sausage. To keep things lively (but safely), there are table-side games and entertainment for company as you drink and make merry. An guadn
